MOON PHASE TODAY · LOCAL TIME
Where is the Moon
right now?
Choose a city and date, then explore the Moon’s direction and height through the evening and next morning. Times follow your selected city.
How to check tonight’s Moon
Start with your observing city and date. Moonrise is when the Moon crosses above the horizon; moonset is when it crosses below. Times follow the selected city’s time zone, including daylight saving time where applicable.
Illumination is not the same as altitude
Illumination is the percentage of the visible lunar disc lit by the Sun, not a measurement of how bright your surroundings are. Altitude is the angle above the horizon: a negative value places the Moon below it. Clouds, buildings or hills can still hide a Moon with a positive altitude.
Find a direction for your observing time
Move through the hourly chart from 6 pm to 6 am the following morning. Check direction and height for your chosen time, then keep a note or export an observing event. If the Moon is missing, check its rise, set and altitude before checking the sky.
Position and rise/set times are approximate and do not include local terrain or weather. For the geometry behind the phases, see NASA Moon Phases.
